Gender and Law

On 4 April, the MA Human Rights and Social Justice program organized a guest lecture at the AUA on gender and law, hosting Dr. Egor Lazarev who is an assistant professor at the Department of Political Science at Yale University and a Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. His research interests lie in political ethnography of state-building and law and society. His primary regional focus is the former Soviet Union.

During the lecture Dr. Lazarev covered the general logic of gender justice, particularly in post-conflict societies, focusing on the women’s legal mobilization in Chechnya. Reflecting on the domain of gender violence, Dr. Lazarev addressed the causes that might lead to variation in government responsiveness to violence against women across countries and over time.

Dr. Lazarev also discussed his book “State-Building as Lawfare: Custom, Sharia, and State Law in Postwar Chechnya” with the students. Egor’s research has also been published in World Politics, World Development, and Political Science Research & Methods.

After the session the HRSJ graduate students were actively engaged in the Q&A session addressing their inquiries to the guest speaker. It was also an amazing opportunity for the students to address all the questions they had regarding Dr. Lazarev’s experience at Yale University and, of course, his very impressive academic journey.
